Starting point

Initial condition

The basin was on the wall intended for the new towel rail. Removing it exposed the mirror's electrical outlet and fixing holes, so the finish had to be restored.

Objective

Aim of the work

Move the basin to the right-hand wall and add a towel rail in its former position, adapting the connections and restoring the affected wall covering.

Assessment

Main construction challenges

  • Modify the water supply and drainage connections for the basin's new position.
  • Relocate the leak sensor, the towel rail's electrical socket and the mirror connection.
  • Keeping the mirror's electrical connection at the same height on the new wall required removing two additional rows of tiles above the basin.

Engineering decisions

Chosen solutions and the reasons behind each priority

Electrical installation

  • Relocation of the leak sensor, the towel rail's electrical socket and the planned mirror connection.

Water supply, drainage and ventilation

  • Adaptation of the water supply and drainage inside the opened wall before closing the partition.

Partitions and finishes

  • Removal of tiles from the affected walls, including two extra rows to retain the mirror connection height.
  • Replacement of the plasterboard backing and restoration of the tiling.

Cost of this project

Labour: €1,100

Labour for this job cost €1,100, including rubble removal. The waste almost filled a bulk bag. This amount applies to this specific job; it is not a total renovation price including materials or a rate for other bathrooms.

Result

The completed transformation

In four working days, the basin was moved to the right-hand wall and a towel rail added in its former position. The building services were adapted and tiling restored in the affected areas.
